Photo Safari

About The Safari

Throughout its existence the art of photography has been linked to western technological growth and industrialization. What better place to explore your own photographic vision than The Carrie Furnaces National Historic Landmark.  The Carrie Furnaces were the heart and soul of U.S. Steel’s Homestead Works during most of the twentieth century and remain the only examples of pre-World War II furnace technology in existence today.

These 3-hour photo safaris are led by RoSA Photo Arts Coordinator Ivette Spradlin, a photographer, video artist, and educator.  Check out her BIO.  Safaris are appropriate for both novice and experienced photographers alike craving an “open” shooting experience with very little interruption, guidance or interference.  For workshops that offer in-depth instruction please consider our Iron Imagery workshops or Guided Workshops below.

Private photographic opportunities are available Monday through Friday, by appointment only. Contact Stacy Drane or call 412-464-4020 ext. 32 for information.

IRON IMAGERY: Tintypes at the Carrie Furnaces

About The Workshop

RoSA is excited to partner with Pittsburgh Filmmakersfor this unique workshop experience.  Capture your own image of the Carrie Furnaces on solid METAL! This exciting workshop introduces the historic photographic process of “dry plate” tintypes. Popular during the late 19th century, tintype photographs were originally photographed on enameled iron and sometimes called “Ferrotypes”. Join visiting photo artist Jeffrey Krsul at the furnaces and don’t miss your chance to have your own unique image of the Carrie Furnaces preserved forever! (This workshop also includes standard digital photographic opportunities for participants.)  Participants will spend time in the field shooting the Carrie Furnaces and travel to Pittsburgh Filmmakers for the second portion of the workshop including dark room development.

A great way to spend a Sunday at the Carrie furnaces.  Learning about old-fashioned photography and chemistry.  Life slows down when you only get two shots to make your best photograph on a metal plate,  and then it takes a few hours to see the result.  No instant digital stuff here!  Well run, informative and most of all, fun.  Thanks RoSA!

LIVE EVENT PHOTOGRAPHY

About The Workshops

Sign up for this unique workshop opportunity and learn the tactics of photographing a live public event at the Carrie Furnaces!  These workshops are led by professional photographer and business owner Heather Tabacci and will include detailed discussion along with ample time to photograph the event. *  Registration fees include entry into each coinciding festival or event at no additional cost!

Effectively photographing an event requires you to tell a story. You must learn the proper etiquette to help your subjects relax and ultimately forget you are in the room. In this workshop you’ll learn how to capture unique angles, techniques, approaches, and have an instructor to provide you with immediate feedback.  The class will begin with a brief demo on event photography and then you will have the opportunity to photograph the event on site.

* Rivers of Steel and event hosts retain the right to use any photograph taken during these workshops for marketing and promotional purposes only.  All other legal copyrights are retained solely by the workshop participant.
