Photo Safari

About The Safari

Throughout its existence the art of photography has been linked to western technological growth and industrialization. What better place to explore your own photographic vision than The Carrie Furnaces National Historic Landmark.  The Carrie Furnaces were the heart and soul of U.S. Steel’s Homestead Works during most of the twentieth century and remain the only examples of pre-World War II furnace technology in existence today.

These 3-hour photo safaris are appropriate for both novice and experienced photographers alike craving an “open” shooting experience with very little interruption, guidance or interference.  Take your time and line up the perfect image of the historic Carrie Furnaces!

FIELD COURSES & SPECIAL TOPICS

RE-FRAMING PITTSBURGH
A Photographic Field Course & Exhibition

Reframing Pittsburgh is a 5-week photography course and exhibition focusing on the recreation of historical photographs of greater Pittsburgh, contained in the Rivers of Steel archives.  Rivers of Steel Arts is excited to partner with Silver Eye Center for Photography to offer this unique field course that explores the region’s changing visual landscape.  Through a combination of classroom meetings and self-guided, on-location shooting, students will recreate two photographs from a selection of archival images.  Each student’s best photograph, along with the original counterpart, will be framed for the final exhibition during a professional framing workshop provided by Silver Eye Center for Photography.  These works will then be included in an exhibition to be held at the Carrie Furnaces Deer Head Gallery in August of 2019. (Framing costs included in the cost of the workshop).
