The Carrie Furnaces National Historic Landmark is understood through the Iron it produced and the site’s physical character. Programming organized under the MATERIAL heading consists of educational workshops and intensive material and/or technical instruction inspired by the historic function of the blast furnaces and their physical transformation over time.
Programs under the PROCESS heading draw inspiration from the alchemical nature of the iron-making process where unique elements combined to form something new. These activities include visual and community arts projects as well as institutional partnerships designed to actively engage surrounding communities throughout the heritage area. Taking place within the Carrie Furnaces and beyond, PROCESS programming recognizes the region as an integrated system of historical, social and cultural influences.
